In brief, I want the override the method `search_users` from the `core_message\api` class.

I tried going about it the way you would overriding a renderer as I couldn't find anything on how to do what I want, but that didn't work.

Is what I'm after even possible?

I need to edit the SQL so only certain users show depending on who's searching.

I'm currently using Totara 11.0 if that helps.
