The way to do this at present is to use the Messaging functionality in Programs. Its possible to have just one course in a program, or multiple sets of courses.

There's a full list of the available notifications in the link; they're pretty comprehensive.

We are looking at refactoring the Messaging system for t13 next year, and its very likely the specific functionality you are looking for will be developed.
