How can I limit resource access to users with the Trainer role?
For instance, a trainer could download a Powerpoint presentation from a Course prior to presenting at a seminar.

This can be achieved by using permissions for the trainer role
If you add a File resource to a course and then select File module administration > Permissions this will show the roles that have permissions for the resource.
The default permission is that a Learner is not able to view hidden activities but trainers are able to so hiding the activity should mean Trainers can see this but learners can't

Thanks Craig - that's worked.
It'd be great if Hidden Topics would be totally hidden instead of the current situation of being "grayed out".

When I did this and logged in as a learner the activity wasn't visible - it should be grey when it is hidden but accessible and not visible when not accessible. Can you check this again - there might be another setting that is affecting this such as audience based visibility which I have turned on.
