User sign up in learning path

We need to resolve the way of assigning (sign up) learning paths for employees by themselves. Our learning paths consits of more courses which are defined by our learning a developmnet departement.

We consider programs as one of the possibilities for our learning pats. However there is not standard way how the user can assign to program by yourself. We are looking for easy and fast way how he can do that - someting like sign up in course. It would by ideal if the user was able to sign up for the program directly from the catalog.

Please if you have any solution in your company how user can assign to prepared learning path, share your experience.

Thanks

Martin

Hi Martin

There is currently work being done on cert/program and course page improvements - including the self enrolment into programs. I will try and get someone working on this to describe the progress of this.

What you can do to enable learners to self select programs is to use Learning plans this will allow learners to add programs (with or without manager approval).

Once the program is in the learner's Learning Plan this will appear in the Current Learning Block which can be added to the dashboard of Learners.

- clicking on the program will show the program structure and allow them to launch the courses in the program with progress being tracked

Hi Crying,

thank for your reply. We have considered this solution before and yes by this we can achieve what we want. The only thing that is not ideal it that work-flow.
The user friendlly behavior would be that user can enroll to program straight way from the program page in order to see program structure. Enrolling to program from Learning plan provide only the name of the program without any additional information.

Anyway that is a great message about work being done on cert/program and course page improvements - including the self enrolment into programs.

Many thanks for your support.

Martin

Hello,

Is there any evolution in this area ? Self-enrolment in curricula and certifications is common in just about any other LMS.

Even though the workarounds may work, this is a huge usability issue and a show-stopper for  my current customer to start using them.

In addition to explaining to users that they have to look for learning offerings in 3 different places (course, programs, certifications catalogue) it's extremely difficult to also add instructions on how to enrol via a plan or fake course to 120K users .

Hi Martin,

We use a workaround in the Totara Academy to allow users to self enrol in our programs, here is how we have set it up:

  1. Create a new single activity course with the single activity as a link or page activity.
  2. Set the completion of this activity when the user views the link or page, and set the completion of the course to when the user completes the activity.
  3. Set up an audience of users who have completed this course.
  4. Use audience enrolment in the program to add the audience created in step 3.

Hi Jordan, looks you have the same thinking as me and my colleague. We have prepared very similar solution on course and audience basis, but there is one issue which we do not solve till now - what if the user decide to unenroll from program? There is not option how to delete activity (course) completion.

We have also considered checbox (custom field) in user profile which could add user to audience.

Thanks for sharing your experience.
