Course Pre-requisite Setup

Hello,

We have several courses with multiple pre-requisite courses. Can you tell us the best way to set this up? We thought about building them into a program, but we're not sure how to keep users from booking into a seminar event directly in the course and not enrolling in the program to get the pre-req assignment. We would like the main course to be visible in the find learning so people can add it to a learning plan. We are ok with just the program being in the find learning, but the system says all courses also need to be set to be visible in addition to the program.

Basically, we want them to be able to add the course to a learning plan, but not attend the seminar event until the pre-req courses are complete. All pre-req courses are on-demand, web-based in Totara. Is there a way within the course to set the other courses up as activities?

Thank you!

Hi Jessica,

There are a number of ways to approach this depending on what you want to achieve, you could probably use a combination of the following:

1) You could use Restrict access to control access to the seminar/activity based on completion of another activity or course, and/or audience membership.

2) You could use dynamic audiences to enroll learners into courses or programs using rulesets based on course completion, program completion or completion dates.

3) You could use Audience-based visibility to make courses available based on course completion, program completion or completion dates.

Hope this is useful,

cheers,

George.

Hello, George,

We think number 1 would work well for us. Can you tell us which of the restrict access options allows you to select the requirement for a course completion? We are trying to restrict access to a seminar activity by requiring completion of several other web-based courses. I attached our menu in case there are differences between instances.

Thank you!

Hi Jessica,

When you say 'other web-based courses' do you mean external to Totara? If so you need to create equivalent courses in Totara (if they don't already exist) and upload completion data for them, or ensure there is an equivalent completion.

Could you tell me which version of Totara you're using?

Here's what's available in t11.

cheers,

George.

Hey Jessica,

You can configure what restriction options you have in Site admin>plugins>Availability restrictions>Manage restrictions.

This means, for example, you could create an Dynamic audience based on course completion, and then base access on membership of it.

Hope this is useful,

George.
