Hi

Is anyone else having issues with how their LMS communicates with Microsoft Outlook?

When a user enrolls and the booking is approved they are meant to receive a calendar invite however they are receiving an email with an attachment that says "not supported calendar message.ics”. When I change the time of a workshop or cancel a workshop they are getting the update like this also rather than updated their calendar.

I have escalated this to our IT team and they think it is a Microsoft issue which they have escalated to them but I just wondered if anyone else has this problem (it only started happening in November).

I would have them use their favorite search engine, and look for the issue: "not supported calendar message.ics".

There seems to be a known issue with certain exchange servers that is fixed with a cumulative update. The support post for the issue with a similar name lays out a set of symptoms, and things to check in the ics with notepad, and also says the resolution is to install a CU on the exchange server.

Best guess though.

Hi Terri

This does look as though this is a known problem in Outlook and there is an update that hopefully will fix this.

If this doesn't fix this then please create a ticket on the support helpdesk with details of the Totara version and seminar notification settings.

Thanks Craig and John for your reply. I have spoken to our IT team and we are going to see what Microsoft comes back with. Will keep you updated on the progress.

I just started receiving this today in ics attached when sent out from our installation.

sorry If I'm hijacking this thread, but I think it might be relevant here.

So after reading through this ( https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/2643084/outlook-receives-a-message-that-has-an-attachment-that-is-named-not-su )on microsofts homepage and testing a bit myself I see that it is when a seminar is setup with multiple events/dates that I get this error.

So a seminar set up like this:


Gets the "not supported calendar message" error.

But a seminar with only one event, set up like this:


works just fine.


Any ideas on how to move forward?

Hi Jonathan 

There is a global seminar setting One message per date that you can tick.

This will send an email for each day of the multi day event which Outlook will have a better chance of recognising.
