Hi everyone,

I open this topic as I have a question related with the usage of badges and their implementation. My main question is if these badges can be easily linked in social media (having in mind more specifically Linkedin). Because I really think that these items can engage and promote the learning and also be meaningfull for the learners.

My question comes because for example today I got the badge for finish the Totara Learn Site Administrator Program and I really liked the idea to see that milestone in the form of a badge. But would be much more meaningfull if I could use that badge for something more than for show on my profile in Totara and of course would be much more impactful if we could use these badges in our organisations for engage the learning and use it as proof that someone finished some specific programs.

But at the moment, I see that are just used for intern consume. Is that correct? There is no way for link it in other sides or do something else with them? Any idea for further uses?

I would really appreciate get some feedback about this topic! :)

Hi Albert,

Thanks for your question, and congratulations on completing your Site Administrator program!

You're absolutely right that these badges are worth showing off. Open badges are designed to be shared outside of the system they are in through badge backpacks. An example of an open backpack is Badgr. You can upload your badges to your backpack so they can be seen by other users. You could then add a link to your backpack on social media such as LinkedIn as you suggest. I know that's not exactly the solution you were asking for, but as far as I know it's the best way at the moment.

As you probably know, we do have an Academy course on badges if you'd like a little more information.

Many thanks

Rachel

Hi Rachel,

Thanks for your reply!

Precisely is what I was trying to do, to connect badges to a backpack but now seems that feature is not available. Actually, the message that I receive when I try to do it is this one:

The Mozilla Backpack service is no longer available

In August 2019, the Mozilla Foundation retired its Open Badges backpack. Connections to other backpack services are not currently available.

So, seems that now there is no way to link these badges to external sources, right?

Or if there is a way, could you tell me wich?

Best regards,

Albert

Hi Albert,

We're working on re-enabling direct linking to external backpacks at the moment, and it's currently on the roadmap for Totara 13. But in the meantime, you can still upload your badges to a backpack manually. We explain how to do this in our Help documentation here

Hope that helps! Do shout if you've got further questions on this - it's great to see people using our badges out in the real world!

Thanks

Rachel
