Exams Repository Solution in Totara

Hi,

I was looking for suggestion if it is possible to build exam repository solution with Totara:

Approval workflow: The solution is to help them coordinate the collaboration/review/update/approval/versioning process of putting together an exam paper.
Question Repository: Besides the option of having one examiner submit all the questions for a paper, we would also like some sort of questions repository where we can then pick n choose questions as needed.
Template generation: Once the questions are set, the paper should be able to be generated with some sort of fixed template and formatting
Redundancy check: The solution should be able to check for repeated (or similar) questions
Multiple Language Support: Need to support multiple languages (Tamil, Chinese, etc), and symbols (including musical) and charts.
Media File (Image/Video Inclusion): Should also allow for media files to be incorporated in the questions
Integration with other tools: Will need to integrate with the new student solution and exam administration solution
Security and data encryption: are critical requirements. It is preferred that even if the initial collaboration can be on the cloud, the ultimate storing of the ‘final’ exam paper should be on-prem.

Hi Nikhil

Totara supports a number of external repositories such as Google drive, Dropbox. Box.

Are you able to use one of these external repositories that has the features above and link to the file from Totara.

Hi Craig,

You mean to say we can manage all the above requirements such as Approval Workflow from GoogleDrive?

Approval Workflow: We want to use Totara as question paper creation from the question bank repository with a approval process around it.

Can we have 4-5 step approval process for Quiz? In which questions can be send back to creator with comments what to modify.

Hi Nikhil

Most external repositories will have some kind of approval workflow built in as do word processors. What I am suggesting is to use the external tool approvals workflows rather than trying to develop your own approval workflow in Totara.

If you are creating quiz questions you might be able to use an external tool to create the questions and import them into Totara. This will probably save time as the interface for creating questions in Totara requires a lot of box filling.

Multiple Language Support: Need to support multiple languages (Tamil, Chinese, etc), and symbols (including musical) and charts.
Totara text editor allows multi language content to be added
Media File (Image/Video Inclusion): Should also allow for media files to be incorporated in the questions.
Totara text editor allows multimedia files to be embedded

Hi Craig,

Thanks for your reply. Uploading questions won't help in our requirement. As we are looking to leverage question creation platform of Totara and looking for approval workflow around there (possibly 7-8 approvals before quiz can be live). Later on, we want to export the quiz as PDF in defined template.

Just to check:

1. Can we add plugin that has approval workflow capabilities? (Custom build)

2. Can we define a template for the export of the quiz?

Hi Nikhil

It is Ok to develop a custom build approval plugin - this will need to be checked by the developers of it to ensure that this works Ok when you upgrade Totara.

There isn't a place to change the appearance of the quiz export - apart from changing the theme elements.
