Can one set course id number as required. By default it as to be unique, but it is not mandatory to be completed.
Can a site admin change this to "required".

The course id number doesn't have a setting to make compulsory.
It is possible to add a course custom field and make this required and unique and also use regular expression validation to allow only specified characters to be entered.
The ID number of a course is only used when matching the course against external systems and is not displayed anywhere on the site
