Hi All, I just wanted to reach out to see if anyone could shed any light on a issue that's been highlighted to me by one of our customers.

When they have deleted a file type from the "file types" list on their Totara v17 site. This file type has been able to be uploaded and viewed in both the "file" and "assignment" activities at a course level.

In the testing I've carried out, I have deleted the "pdf" document type, then navigated to a course and uploaded a pdf doc using the file activity and then also done the same process as a learner within the assignment activity (both functioning as though there had been no changes made)

The documentation would imply that deleting a file type would render it unusable in the system but this testing would suggest otherwise.

I have misunderstood the behaviour of file type deletions?

Any help or advice would be amazing! 🙂

Hi Kristian

I think that the file type is referring to the file extensions and what format the file is and what to do with the file. (MIME type)

So a file with the extension pdf might have a MIME type of application/pdf which means I need to launch the associated PDF program that the user has installed and it’s registered as the application/pdf handler”

If you deleted the file type this deletes the action that takes pace when a pdf file is encountered ratherthan preventing the file being uploaded.

To control the upload of files for assignments go to the Assignment settings > Accepted file types and add the file extensions you want to allow including .pdf

The file may also not be uploaded as there is an upload file size limit on the course or activity
