Marking an attendee as passed or failed

Hi All,

when marking someone as attending a seminar there is no option to mark whether they actually passed or failed the seminar. Currently if someone has failed and needs to re-attend I am removing them from the attendance list in order for them to be able to re-book and leaving a note on the removal as to why i am removing them.

i have the settings as they can only book onto one seminar of a course at one time or we get multiple bookings and wasted spaces.

it would be a lot easier if there was a second column with a drop down of passed or failed. so when marking we can mark that they attended and that they also passed or failed. then if they failed it gives them the option to re-book without having to remove them from the attendance list of the seminar they originally attended.

this occurrence can happen a lot in healthcare if they have a test at the end of a seminar such as medication training or emergency first aid as examples.

Is this kind of detail to marking being included in the road map at all or can be considered for future development?

In this situation, we use the "Partially Attended" option, to signify that they were there, but shouldn't be marked as complete for the activity.

I believe there was talk of allowing custom values (each assigned a "point" value) for attendance outcomes, but I don't know if anything has happened / will be happening about that.

I came to ask a similar question. We run courses that staff may have attended but they have failed the course. These are national courses and they have to be shown as Failed. I wonder why there is no option to add our own status's in or in fact just have a Failed status option.

Could the Manual event grading options work?

(Version 18)

In the seminar administrator settings, under Grade, there is an option for manual event grading including what a passing mark is.

The activity completion settings could be updated to require a passing mark of 100 rather than a fully/partially attended status.

Course completion criteria relys on completing the seminar activity, which requires a manual grade.

Taking attendance could look like this(attached immage),

Came to the forums for another reason, but as this has been our biggest problem with Totara for about 5 years, I thought I'd comment.

It's not just failing the seminar event for us, but the fact that one cannot fail a course. They simply don't meet completion requirements and remain enrolled for potentailly years, or take it again and pass. The big problem with that is there is no record of the initial failure. No failure date stamp.

They way we have gotten around this is by adding a "Failed" option to Attendance. However, this results in a discrepancy in the Course status report versus the attendance report. The course status report will simply no have a completion date as it "hangs" there in limbo, while the attendance report will show "Failed." This also requires a lot of instruction/communication to system trainers to be sure to correctly mark the attendance as passed/failed.

I hope this helps. If you don't have programmers who can add the attendance option for you, you can go into the language pack and change "Partially attended" to say "Failed," however this would have all the downsides mentioned, and doesn't take into account whether you actually need the "partially attended" option.
