I am wanting to allow users/learners the option to join and more importantly opt out of an audience. Any suggestions?

My suggestion is to create a compulsory user profile checkbox field (Users > User profile field) with the default to opt into the audience .
The field will be added to the default profile page
Create an audience rule for this field to be true so the user is added automatically
