Multi-factor authentication (MFA) now available for all users
We’ve listened to your feedback! Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is now available for all user roles, not just administrators, helping strengthen account security across your Totara site.
Enabling MFA is a simple but highly effective way to protect your people and your data, and we encourage organisations to take advantage of it as part of their security best practice. Further improvements are coming in version 20, but if you’re using Totara 18 or 19 you can now enable manual MFA opt-in and access the MFA report source to monitor adoption.
If you have any questions about enabling MFA or deciding on the best approach for your organisation, please speak with your Totara Partner, they’ll be happy to guide you.

Granular control
Enforce MFA at the level that suits your organisation: by Audience, Tenant, Role, or Account Type.
Setup enforcement & grace periods
Require users to set up MFA before logging in, with optional grace periods to support a smooth transition.
Optional opt-in
If you prefer, MFA can remain voluntary for users.
Reporting
A new MFA report source lets you easily track who has, or hasn’t, enabled MFA.
Admin control
Only Site Administrators can reset MFA; users can’t reset their own factors.
UI updates
MFA rules can now be managed from Admin Settings for clearer configuration.
