Do any Health Care providers use learn for clinical competencies willing to share their experiences?

Not yet, because I don't think the competency functionality is quite up to the job yet, but hopefully the changes in v20 will significantly improve it and we can start to explore using competencies across the organisation.

I've just been asked to look into this too. The Totara website suggests using Perform for management of competencies, is that what you're referring to when you say it's not up to the job?

Yes. The Competency functionality in Perform hasn't massively changed since it was in Learn, and from my perspective is missing some pretty important features in terms of who can assess who for competencies, how they get signed off, etc. The changes coming in v20 will (hopefully) resolve that.

Kia ora Daniel,

We're in the process of building a competency framework and on V17 but will be moving to V20 later this year. So very interested in hearing more about where your current version of Perform isn't meeting what you need it to do and how V20 will help.

Ngā mihi,

Larry

The big thing for me is who assesses / signs off competencies. The v17 functionality has roles for the learner and their manager, but a lot of our assessment will be done by peers (anyone who has the competency themselves) or by a large number of "link" trainers within clinical areas. I am led to believe that v20 will bring significant improvements in who can sign people off (and potentially how they are signed off) which will mean we can start building frameworks, etc.

Thanks Daniel that's very useful to know. We would require the same functionality for link trainers - I'd assumed this could be addressed using roles/permissions. Looking further down the road (or into dreamland perhaps) I wonder if there would be a case for an NHS wide competency mapping exercise.

That's right, Daniel. Using 2 new features in V20 you can do this.

  1. You can create an audience based on skill proficiency - https://totara.canny.io/roadmap-items/p/competency-can-be-rated-by-an-audience

  2. You can add one or more audiences to rate learners' skill - https://totara.canny.io/roadmap-items/p/competency-proficiency-as-ruleset-for-dynamic-audiences
