Can you please advise if it has always been the case, regardless of version, that a user's bookings and course enrolments are removed when the audience they are a member of is unassigned from the course? If not, can you please advise when this change occurred?

Can you also advise if this can bechanged via settings? It appears according to your help documentation that this can only be achived with the manual enrolment method - https://totara.help/docs/unenrolling-users

Good morning Sarah,

I hope this message finds you well,

Yes as far as I'm aware this has been a core behaviour for as long as I can remember, unless your site was on a very old version and then upgraded to a newer post 15 version, as our documentation on 15 outlines the same behaviour as well:
https://totara.help/15/docs/unenrolling-users?highlight=Unenrolment%20considerations

If an audience is removed I would expect all seminar bookings to be removed along with the enrollment for the users that make up that audience. The same would happen if you have a rule in the audience that the users no longer match against and have the 'remove' users context in that audience - No longer in audience, no longer enrolled.

The same event would occur if the users were suspended as well - All seminar bookings would be removed for the users.

Manual enrollments are harder to 'delete' (or make mistakes with), but create more administration time to manage.

Ensuring that audiences are not removed by training staff or by testing changes on your staging site (if possible) is always advisable.

I hope this helps,

Kind regards,

Is there a way to change the settings to prevent this from occurring?

Hi Sarah,

Seminar participation depends on the user still having a valid enrolment context for the course, and audience removal removes that unless another enrolment source remains active, there is no setting to prevent this as the enrollment is the key thing.

Hi David

We use the Program enrolment plugin, and the setting selected for External unenrol action is Disable course enrolment. The setting doesn't seem to take effect since, like you've described, user enrollment is removed when the audience is unassigned.

What actions are seen as "external unenrolment" by the program enrolment plugin then?

Hi Natalia,

I believe it's when a user is 'Manually Unenrolled' i.e. something outside of the program enrolment method itself
