System Generated (NoReply@) Emails Display User's Full Name?

System Generated (NoReply@) Emails Display User's Full Name?

Hello!

In one of our environments, the system generated emails that have the noreply@ from address are ALSO showing a random user's first and last name next to it.  Any idea how that might be happening?

The email comes across looking something like this:

  From: Frederick Rieser <noreply@totaraenvironment.com>

It's occurring for ALL the system generated emails.

Yeah, Patrick's correct, John. If it's not the primary administrator, check out the Support Contact (Site administration > Server > Support contact) and see if a value has been provided for the "Support name".

Hey guys,

Unfortunately, this user is not listed anywhere in the system as an administrator of anything.  Under Site Admin > Server > Support Contact..   we have a default user name entered liked   Site Administrator for the name and the support email listed there is a generic email as well.  No idea why a normal user's information is showing up as the full name in system generated email messages...

Hi John

According to https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=326172 if you have forum_replytouser and emailonlyfromnoreplyaddress set to Yes and the no reply address defined then the sender name +noreply email address is shown in the email.

If you have this combination of settings then unticking one of these should stop the sender name showing.

Here are the email settings we currently have.   Our issue is that the system generated emails have a FROM address of:

FREDERIC REISER [mailto:noreply@fhfafedtalent.ibc.doi.gov

Why is it putting a users full name there?  For instance, the email being sent out is the one generated by the system after a user registers for a course.

We've tried checking and unchecking these different boxes..  for some reason, we are still getting a users full name in the FROM even though the actual email address is the noreply address that is not attached to that user.

Hi John

The course welcome message may be being sent from the Self enrolment -enrolment plugin.

If this is the case then go to the self enrolment settings under Site admin menu and there is a setting Send course welcome message - change from the course contact to from the no-reply address. (using v10)

We are on version 9.2.2.   The send course welcome message option is just a checkbox in our version.

Hi John

It looks like this option was added in v10 to prevent this happening for course welcome messages sent through self enrolment. 

Is the person in the email the course contact for the course ? if so then it is possible to have no course contact. Select Site Admin > Appearance > Courses and untick the course contact role.

Well..  it's me again..  bringing back a post from 2017 in 2021..    we are now on v12.26.  And this issue has some how cropped back up haha.


Any new ideas?  Self Enrollment is set to send message from No-Reply address, yet we are seeing the course creators name displayed in front of the no-reply address in the emails being generated.

Hi George,

We have just had the same question for one of our users.

We are on Totara V12.33 and our reminder emails are displaying 

I don't know where it is picking Richard's name from.  Could it be that he was the first person to be added in the role of Tutor for this course?

I'm keen to know how to resolve this too.

What I found was the email is listed as from the first person in the Training Editor role. I created a dummy admin that was alphabetically first and assigned the dummy name "Main Admin" tot he Training Editor role and at least it displays as from Main Admin "Noreply..."


Fixed for the user but odd for us to manage and remember.
