After an initial look it looks like this is not possible at the moment, though I have found a possible work around on the Moodle tracking system. Details in the links below, though I'd suggest reading the whole thread.

This is a very old moodle feature thread that seemingly hasn't gone anywhere, but there is still a fair amount of interest/activity on the thread. So for now I have logged a feature request in our own tracking system, though there will probably be some discussion about the security issues with emailing around usernames and passwords. And at the moment we are still prioritising bug fixes over features so I can't give you an eta on this, I'll link this thread to the feature so any progress gets posted here.
