What you need to look at is Conditional access. Are you talking about the next topic within the course, or an entirely different course?

Hi Melanie,
The best way to do this is to use the Programs (Site admin>Courses>Programs) functionality where you can contruct a pathway based on dependencies. You can also set Completion dependencies with the course Completion tracking whereby a course cannot be completed unless other course are completed.
