We plan to use audiences to enrol learners on new courses. We have categorised all our positions as one of two types using the "position type" field e.g. Staff / Manager.
Only branch staff should be included in the audience but there isn't an option to base an audience on type?

Can this be added via a configuration change within TOTARA?

Hi Ben,
Currently there is no way to do this. I've filed an enhancement request but there's no guarantee when/if this will eventually get added to the system.
You could try setting up the ID Numbers of positions with some sort of prefix that you could use to identify particular types? Or a user profile custom field may be another way around it.
A fix for this issue was included in today's (3rd June 2014) release of Totara 2.6.2
