Hi everyone,
We are currently exploring a possibility of using Elasticsearch as a tool to generate Activity Stream in Totara Social. Elasticsearch is already utilised in Totara Social to provide indexed search, however right now it is an optional setting and the system can run without it. Tighter integration Elasticsearch has the potential to help us generate a fast and scalable Activity Stream on large sites. Having a newsfeed (Activity Stream) which performs well for everyone independent on the size of the system is something we are constantly working on, and we hope that Elascticserach would help us to achieve this goal.
Taking everything said into account, this would mean making Elasticsearch a requirement for the next major release (3.0) of Totara Social, which means you won't be able to upgrade or install the system without providing connection to your running instance of Elasticsearch.
We are interested in finding out how this decision would impact your existing/potential installation. Are there any issues that you would have? Feel free to give us your thoughts, feedback, and position on this.
To make it clear, this change would happen in the next major release only and any existing or future releases from the stable series of Totara Social (1.0.x and 2.x) won't be affected.
Yuliya
