I'm looking for some best practices on what to do with old audiences.
Do you typically add an end date or delete them completely? From the functional stand point, what effect each action has has within Totara (how does it effect courses, programs, etc., if it does at all)?

Hi Marina!
The biggest issue would be if you're still using audiences for anything like courses with audience-based visibility enabled or program/certification assignments via audience. If the audiences aren't tied to any current or former learning, then you're able to delete them without an impact.

Hi Marina,
If a user is removed from an enrollment method (like an audience) then the program/cert is no longer visible to them. Their course progress though will still appear in their Record of Learning.

Hi there,
Is there a way to run a report of all audiences and to check whether they are in use and where? This would really help us clean up our audiences without the danger of messing things up. We have over 500 audiences (and growing) and would like to start deleting the older ones that are not is use.

You can create a report using "Audiences: Enrolled Learning" report source and that will show you the list of course, programs and certificates and which audiences are assigned to each. You can use this to reverse-look up audiences because this report doesn't not include audiences that are not used, as far as I am able to see.
