I don't know what this does - inserting this in a HTML block didn't do anything - is there some code customisation.

There is a course completion report that can be added as a report block but this doesn't have this reference in it.

When you type [[course_completion:courseshortname]], was there a space between semicolon and courseshortname?

It won't work if there's a space.

I found where this "[[course_completion:..]] comes from. It is part of a plugin named filter_coursecompletion.
