Temporary managers role in performance management

In Totara it is possible to assign a temporary manager who is able to perform a specified manager's tasks for a specified period. Tasks include approving learning plans, viewing staff records and approving face to face course requests.

When it comes to temporary managers covering performance management related tasks we understand there may be some complexity surrounding what the temporary manager should be able to do and see.

We would really like to understand more about how things work in your organisations.

Some questions we have are:

1.     What scenarios in your organisation cause a temporary manager to be assigned?

2.     What is the scope of their role as a temporary staff manager?

3.     Should the temporary manager be able to see historic performance-related information such as previous appraisal conversations or feedback about the user they are managing?

4.     Should the temporary manager be able to complete the user's appraisal whilst they are in the role?

a.      Should the temporary manager complete a separate appraisal of the user or continue with the appraisal that is already in progress?

5.     Does the business as usual manager keep access to the user they manage in Totara while the temporary manager is in place?

6.     What data should the temporary manager see once they are no longer covering the business as usual manager?

7.     Once the temporary manager role ends should the user keep access to finalise their input in the users performance activities?
