Initial certification pathways being lost if recert/update has not been completed before expiry

Initial certification pathways being lost if recert/update has not been completed before expiry

We have a real problem with the initial learning pathway being 'forgotten' when a user does not complete the re-certification pathway for the required certification within the required time.

Is there anyway around this without having to manually re-input the initial pathway date of completion to match that of the re-certification/update?

This is an issue for the majority of our certifications.

Hi Alice

Are you sure that the original certification is forgotten - does it show up on the Record of learning as a previous completion?

How do the users get re enrolled on the Certification - if they are reassigned  then their previous progress is attempted to be restored.

Regards

Yes it shows as a previous course completion in history, however the certification does not recognise it as the re-certification pathway has not been completed within the refresher period time frame.

For example:

Patient handling key trainer initial training (original pathway) is complete and expires 1st Jan 2020.

Learner completes key trainer update training (re-certification pathway) on 3rd Jan 2020.

Certification for patient handling key trainer is not awarded as the original patient handling key trainer is 'out of date'.

Hi Alice

Thanks for the clarification - when a Certification expires and the user is reassigned to the certification they are enrolled in the primary certification path.

Has the certification window opened yet ?- when this happens then in theory any progress from the original Certification should be restored as below.

When the certification window opens, all learning (courses) for both certification paths will be reset, even though only recertification path courses will be required for recertification. The reason is to ensure that the primary certification path courses are prepared in case the user's certification expires. In that case the learning for the original certification path will not be reset at the time of expiry, as some of it may have been partially completed while trying to recertify and might contribute to the original certification path. For example, when the two paths contain the same content, when a user's certification expires they will not lose any progress towards becoming certified again.

Thank you Craig.

The solution would be that users who expire should be able to continue and not be returned to the initial pathway /start.

Hi all,

I think this is a good idea to have additional configuration whereby you can (as an admin) determine whether a learner stays on the recert path or is routed to the original certification path.

The current functionality causes an issue for organisation where they have multiple courses in the orig cert pathway and only one refresher course in the recert pathway. They don't want people to do the original pathway regardless of having an 'expired' status.

Also having some flexibility around refresher courses would be great.

For example in Australia with First Aid people complete their First Aid Course which needs to be repeated every three years and the CPR component needs to be refreshed every 12 months.

So it would look like this:

Year One - First Aid Course

Year Two - CPR course

Year Three - CPR course

Year Four - Go back to year one and repeat

Thanks
Geanz

Hi Geanz

Thanks for details of your requirements - I think this would be good to add to the Suggest feature forum as is a good use case. I checked to see if this has already been suggested and couldn't find anything suggested.

It is possible using the certification completion editor to change individuals records but not very good if there are lots of users in this situation.

Dear Craig,

How can we unenroll user from courses in the primary certification path after user completes the re-certification path on time?

Hi Jussi

When a Certification expires the course completion records in the certification will be archived to history and the courses in the recertification path will be reset and a new expiry date set and will be available for enrolment.

Once a learner has been enrolled into a course through a certification they remain enrolled . Can you explain more on why you need to unenrol users from courses in their primary certification path?

One way you could achieve this is to use the program enrolment setting Enrolment duration to a set period but this would also apply to courses in the recertification path eventually.
