Certifications and In Progress status

Certifications and In Progress status

We have a few certifications with a course with one seminar to attend. When someone books themselves on the seminar their certification status changes to "In Progress". If the course is cancelled or the learner cancels their booking, or if they do not attend or only partially attend the status is still set to "In Progress". We've found cases of people hanging around for years as "In Progress" when they are technically expired.

Is there a setting which would automatically flip the status back to Expired or Certified either after a period of time, or when the attendance is taken for the seminar? We've reset these manually for now but it's not sustainable for us to keep doing this.

We use Totara 15 by the way

Hi Stacey

According to the documentation  for certifications when a certification period passes and a course is reset  the seminar activity previous attendance data will be archived. Any event sessions that took place before the certification window opens will not count towards course completion.

Can you check what the settings for the course are under completion tracking - - is it Mark as in progress on first view? if this is the case the user only need to view the course to be shown as in progress rather than completing an activity.

Hi Craig, thanks for the reply

Had a look and "Mark as in progress on first view" is unticked.

Certifications are working correctly for the vast majority of people. If they have attended, the certification status changes to "Certified" and when the window opens it correctly archives the last attendance. The issue seems to be if someone has signed up but then never attended for whatever reason. The "In Progress" hangs around and never returns to Expired if the learner for whatever reason doesn't sign up again
