Course consists of external link

Hi - We have a "course" that links out to a free course offered by our state government. Some learners are annoyed because they take the course, complete it and get their certificate from the state -- but the course still appears in their Totara Dashboard as incomplete.

I've set this course to "enable completion tracking." Wondering if changing that would make it so they don't see it as incomplete. I've searched the forums and the documentation -- but can't figure out what happens if I turn that off.

Any insight would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Patty

Hi Patty

The 'enable completion tracking' setting does need to be enabled for course progress/completion  to be shown.

Once course tracking is enabled then the activities within the course can have their own activity completion conditions and the completion of the activity count towards the course completion.

In your case with a link to an external course,  if the result passed back to Totara (is it a SCORM)  then the activity completion could be based on the grade or status of the external activity. Otherwise the completion might have to be by viewing the activity or the Learner saying they have completed it.

Thanks, Craig. No data is passed back to us - SCORM or otherwise. We are essentially just providing a link to an external course, so I was thinking that if we turned off "enable completion tracking" then the learners would no longer see the course in their "Courses Your're Enrolled In" block as incomplete. It bugs some of them to see it as incomplete, even though they know they've completed it. So if I turned off completion tracking, would it just say "not tracked"?

Hi Patricia

The current Learning block shows Not tracked - the course completion report doesn't seem to show the course at all when I tried.

Craig - What activity type would you recommend -- where they just submit it? Seems like that might work?

Hi Patricia

An assignment activity would be suitable as it allows the uploading of a file by the learner and this can be viewed and assessed and the activity completed .

Hi Patty

We have a number of courses like and have set them up as Craig has described with a quiz activity and a statement confirming they have completed the course externally and have the certificate available for inspection.

What we would ideally like to do is to have a learning activity that allows the user to upload their certificate which would mark the course as complete.

Then allow managers to be able to view the certificate if required.

Unfortunately this does not seem to be possible.

I'm sure this is a common problem so would be interested to hear how others integrate with external sites and validate completion.

Hi Paul - Yes that approach would be ideal for us too!

Hey Paul - Couldn't you add an assignment that allows them to upload a certificate, and then make that a requirement of course completion?

Patricia

We use as you say an asignment activity for external courses that are online.  The learner uploads their achieved certificate to the course page and then continues with the local lerning though it could be a course completion.  I get notified when the learner has uploaded as i like to check it is the required certificate.  If not i remove the completion and email the learner to have another go :)

KInd regards

Jo

Thanks for everyone's response to this post and suggestions.

Sounds like assignments are the way to go so will investigate this option further.
