SCORM Completion Issues

SCORM Completion Issues

Hi All,

We have a course that has 5 SCORMS that need to be completed for the course to be completed. This is happening to three of our courses.

Users are becoming stuck on the SCORM packages resulting in that module/SCORM  not being marked as complete and the next one being restricted despite everything in the SCORM being complete & the summary appearing to show it is complete. This does not appear if something in the SCORM has been missed being completed.

The weird thing is not all users are becoming stuck with the SCORM being marked as not complete.

We have tested this on multiple browsers & devices and it seems that there is no linking factor as to why some users get stuck and others can complete the entire course with no issues at all. We have been unable to replicate the issue ourselves which makes it more frustrating.

This has only been happening since we updated our SCORMs but no core settings were changed in Totara.

Our course settings are based on SCORM completion and the next SCORM access is based on the previous one being completed.

We have had to go and manually mark the SCORMs/Modules complete for hundreds of users over the last couple weeks.

Any insight as to why this would be happening or different things to look at in settings would be appreciated!

Hi Larry,

I have had a look through there our SCORMs save as "submitted the element 'cmi.core.lesson_status' with the value of 'completed' for the attempt with the id '1' for a scorm activity"

We have the grading as "Highest Grade" would changing it to "Learning Objectives" make a difference as per the below table

Hi Larry,

It actually reports both cmi.core.lesson_status, and cmi.core.score.raw, dependent on the user from the live logs i can see.

Hi Dani,

Not sure.

The fact it is working for some and not for others definitely makes me think a setting somewhere is involved. But if the SCORM is passing completed records for both those that can progress and those that can't then I'm at a loss I'm afraid.

These are the different messages - when one scorm is completed, the other when they get stuck.

Hi Dani,

The fact it is reporting both status and raw makes me think that is the issue. I'd suggest changing the Grading method but the table you referenced earlier isn't clear as to what one to use when your SCORM is reporting both status & raw.

This is from the SCORM troubleshooting page and may help.

SCORM and the gradebook

Some SCORM packages report both cmi.core.lesson_status and cmi.core.score.raw. Others report only cmi.core.lesson_status, or only cmi.core.score.raw. The Grading Method setting for SCORM objects is meant to account for that.

If you have the Grading Method set to Highest gradeAverage grade, or Sum grade, and your learning object does not report a score, only, cmi.core.lesson_status, then there will be no numerical score to pass to the gradebook.

If your SCOs do not report cmi.core.score.raw, then the best Grading Method setting is Learning Objects. This reports either a 1 or a 0 as a score for each learning object. The gradebook value for that SCORM activity is the percent of scos in the package for which learners got a 1.

On the other hand, if your SCOs do not report a lesson_status, then select one of the score-based Grading Method options, such as Highest grade,Average grade, or Sum grade, and not Learning Objects.

If you do not know what your SCOs are reporting to the LMS, then run them through to completion with debugging on.

Much of the way SCORM objects are graded is controlled inside the SCORM Authoring process before it is packaged for use in an LMS like Totara; make sure all your grading settings are set correctly

Hi There

You mention that the SCORM activities have been recently updated - What you might find is that the users that are having issues are ones that started an attempt on the previous version of the SCORM files - We've had this issue before and have to manually clear their attempt to allow them to start fresh on the new version.

Might help.

Cheers

Nevin

Hi Nevin,

This is happening for learners who have enrolled after the scorms have been updated, we are aware the learners may get stuck if they were midway through a scorm when they update occurred.
