Backup and Restore Errors

After backing up multiple courses without issue I am suddenly getting this error (error error_opening_file) when I attempt to backup. Also when I try to restore courses that had successfully backed up it is now saying (The selected file is not a valid Totara backup file and can't be restored.). Any ideas?

Hi Sarah

Is the course you are backing up have any external  plugins - is the file from a newer version of Totara or a different LMS somehow,

If this doesn't help then can you or your Totara create a support ticket with a copy of the backup without user data if possible,

Regards

Sarah, if it helps, this is how to determine the version of the backup file, which is basically a tarball (TAR/GZ archive)

  • Open the XXXXXX.MBZ backup file in 7-Zip, WinRAR or similar
  • Extract the single file within
  • rename the single file within to XXXXX.TAR
  • Open the TAR file with 7-Zip, WinRAR or similar
  • Read the file 'Moodle-backup.xml'

You'll be presented with a bunch of useful info on the backup, including version info.
