Using courses in multiple programs/certifications

Good Morning All,

I'm trying to automate a process on our LMS site, using a certification, whilst also trying to remove duplication by having multiple courses with the same content.

We have officers in my organisation that require a 'warrant', which needs to be reissued every 3 years. Therefore I've set up a 'warrant' certification, where learners complete some detailed training (on course A, and course B), after which a warrant card will be issued and valid for 3 years. I've then added a recertification path after 2 years and 9 months the window opens and they have to complete course C which is a simple refresh.

In the background, I have another program, which also contains course A and B as part of a bigger learning package, my hope being that as long as they complete course A and B, they will be progressing on both the program AND the certification.

However, the danger now is that if they let the certification expire, it will effectively remove all their progress on course A and B, and therefore reduce their progress on the other program, which I don't want.

Any advice on how to get around this? Is there a way that you can prevent a certification from removing progress on the courses? I know it's probably best practise to only have courses in either the certification, or the program (not both), but we have different learners doing different training packages, that both need the warrant and therefore wanted to use that to run alongside their respective programs in the background.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks,

Annika

Hi Annika,

That sounds similar to an issue we had where Totara archives the original course completion and the recertification course completion when the certification window opens in case the user doesn't complete the recertification course before expiry and therefore needs to recomplete the original course.  This confused some of our users and would complete the original course when they should be completing the recertification course.

We got around it by not adding the original course to the certification and using an audience to enrol in the certification.

Our solution was: user completes course A and is placed in audience.  Users in that audience are enrolled in the certification.  The certification has course B as the content.  When the window opens course B is reset but not course A.

Maybe that would worrk for you.

Nathan

This is so helpful Nathan. Do you think if the original course in the initial certification path was part of another pgoramme/course completion requirement, it would then bounce them out of the completion state, and cause this course to go from complete to incomplete? We use certifications as part of inductions. Our inductions are a single course page, with many other courses required to be completed in the completion settings.
