Hi,

I've been trying to assign to "evidence items" to skills in TOTARA: For one particular skill, I would like to assign a few courses as evidence items.

But whenever  I try to assign 1 course as evidence item, then I get either a blanc screen or the error message "Could not update competency evidence count". When I get the blanc screen, I just need to refresh to see that the course has been taken into account as evidence items.

More troublesome is when I try to assign more than 1 course as evidence items: Whether it is by adding another evidence item to a skill which is already assigned an evidence item or when selecting 2 courses as evidence items in the dedicated pop-up, I systematically get the attached screen with the error message "Could not update competency evidence count". Then this screen leads me to the site front page and the said skills shows no evidence items recorded. (if one evidence item was recorded before, then the process of adding another erase it).

Could you please advise if I got anything wrong in the process of assigning evidence items?

Hi Christian

I have tried on demo.totaralms.com to assign two courses as evidence items to one competency and this is accepted without this error message - there may be something not setup correctly in your setup

The process I went through was (is this what you did?)

  1. login as administrator.
  2. Go to the Course > Competencies
  3. Select  Assign the course completion to competency .
  4. Locate the course based competency that you want to add from the framework
  5. Do this for the other course you want to add

 

To check that the competency has been added

  1. To to Site Administration > Competencies > Manage competencies

This will show that the competencies and the Evidence items for each competency

You should see that there are two Evidence items assigned from courses to the one competency (see table below)

You should also check in the Course > Competencies to see that this is assigned to the course.

You should also check in the Course > Competencies to see that this is assigned to the course.

Hi Craig,

I originally assigned the evidence items in a different manner, which I describe below:

1. login as admin

2. Go to Home > Manage Competencies > "skill_name"

3. Click "assign course completion"

4. Select the desired courses (for which course completion is enable)

5. Click "OK"

and the above bug appears.

 

I tried the process you indicate in your message and it turns out that it works when I assign the first course to the competency. When I tried to assign the 2nd course, then I get the error message posted above.

Interestingly though, now the 2 evidence items I wanted to link to that particular competency appear in the section "evidence items". Then when I click "return to competency frameworks" then the count of evidence items for the said competency is ZERO.

 

Our site is currently not online, you need to be granted access to our VPN to access it. I'll try to get your the access within today for you and Danielle to try it out.

I've created a bug report for this issue, and I'll try and look into it soon. I'll try and figure out what's going on myself first but if I can't reproduce it I might need some further help.

Hi again,

I think I've managed to isolate the problem - it seems that it only causes an error if the competency has a quote in the name or description - is that true in your case? If so, try temporarily removing any quotes from the competency and it should work.

I'll prepare a proper fix for the next release that will resolve the issue properly.

Simon, Danielle,

In our case the competency does not have any quote in the name or description. See the below snapshot for the actual name and description of the competency.

Appreciate if you could further investiagate as this is becoming a major issue for us.

By the way, there's another strage thing with the competency pasted above and its parent group:

The above snapshot shows "Starting a pump" as an evidence item for this competency. However, when I go back to the competency framework the count of evidence items does not reflect this. (See below snapshot.)

Indeed, it shows 0 evidence items for the competency, though it does indicate 1 evidence item for the skill group.

Any views?

Hi Christian,

I believe all of these issues are caused by the same bug and should be fixed in the next release.

We're in the process of packaging and testing it right now so we should be able to release it in the next couple of hours.

I'd suggest you try upgrading to the new release, and re-attach the evidence and I believe it will start working.

Sorry that this is causing you problems, if the problem isn't fixed by the next release I'll follow it up straight away.
