You aren't doing anything wrong, this bug was reported https://bugs.totaralms.com/show_bug.cgi?id=9695 for resolution.
Course events can be added through creating a face to face activity in the course with sessions for the events. This will place them on the Calendar for course participants with the ability to set reminders and book the event.

This was a bug but it's been fixed in release 1.0.36 and 1.1.15, see:
