Hi Liz,
This seems to happen if a user has a timezone set that is different from the timezone of the server, or the Facetoface session. I have a patch in review to change the calendar to display the time on the day view to the Facetoface standard format including the timezone to avoid confusion.

A fix for this issue was included in today's (7th January 2014) release of Totara 2.5.5
