It looks like your import file has email addresses in the username column.

Hi Liz,
Can you confirm what version of 2.5 you are on? I just managed to reproduce this issue on 2.5.0, but when I upgraded my test site to 2.5.4 and tried again it imported without any problems.
There have been a number of bug fixes since 2.5.0 so if you are on that release you might want to upgrade to the most recent version (2.5.5 is coming out later today so that might be the best choice).

Hi Liz,
No unfortunately I don't expect 2.5.5 will fix it if you are on 2.5.4, since it worked for me on 2.5.4. There must be some other difference between our setups or something I'm missing. I am not in tomorrow but I'll ask another developer to try to reproduce this and debug the problem.

A fix for this issue was included in today's (21st January 2014) release of Totara 2.5.6
