Grades from "retired" quiz activities

When we have a change to a quiz, we hide the old activity and build a new quiz activity. I'm wondering if there are any tips for how to handle the gradebook when we do this.

When we added the new version of the quiz, everyone who took the previous version now has a grade of 0%. Are there any tips for how to maintain the grade calculations for people who took the couse in when it included the old quiz?

Hi Carla,

Just hiding the quiz wont affect the grades. Can you supply more details about your process?

cheers,

George.

Right. But it does adjust the weights in the gradebook.

By default, it splits the weights evenly between the old quiz and new quiz.

But of course, we want the new quiz to count 100% of the course grade. But then, this gives every past participant who completed the old quiz a grade of 0%.

Hi Carla,

Can you give me step-by-step recreation so I can understand exactly what you are doing, and can you explain what it is you want to achieve exactly?

cheers,

George.

I'll lay out the entire scenario:

1. Course created, has one quiz. Quiz grade is weighted at 100%.

2. After two months, the quiz questions need to change. Totara does not allow you to add qustions/remove questions from a quiz that has been attempted, so we make a new version.

3. What do we do with the gradebook? We can't set either quiz as the 100% weighted grade item, because users from the past will have their grade recalcuated and get a 0%.

Hi Carla,

While you should wait for the official Totara answer, we recently had an issue like this and used a Gradebook calculation - the MAX()  function -  to find the highest grade across two activities to be the Course Grade.

It's documented here;

Austin, I can't thank you enough for jumping in here.

This not only solved the issue I posted about initially, but also helped us with some other complex gradebook issues.

I think we are now gradebook experts :)

FYI -- while this worked perfectly it had a side effect.

For trainer roles to be able to view the grades that use a calculation you must allow a permission called "Manage Advanced Grading Methods" (managegradingforms).
