Lessons - being able to come back after they're completed and view content again?
by Fiona Bowen - Friday, 1 April 2022, 12:56 AM

Hi there,

We have some lessons where users have already completed them, but they're keen to revisit the valuable content within them.  Users are being presented with error messages - and aren't able to reenter the lessons.

Is there a way that after a lesson has been successfully completed, and marked as complete, that a user can reenter the lesson to view and scan relevant content again - without restarting the lesson/or needing to redo any quizzes etc within the lesson again?

I was looking at the flow setting, but believe this is only relevant as the users are completing the lesson for the first time?  It isn't relevant after the lesson is complete ... I don't think.  Is there another setting that I can change that will allow users to re-enter the lesson again?

Cheers,

Fiona

Hi Fiona

We regularly encounter this issue. Our learners want to /have to refresh their memory of module content but get an error message or blank screen if they've already successfully completed the module.

The only solution I've found is to reset the user attempts.

  • Go to the course page where the module sits
  • click module title to move to next page, then click the 'Reports' tab
  • find the user via first and surname initials
  • place tick in box next to user name
  • scroll down and click 'delete selected attempts'

Have the user refresh their browser cache and open the module again.

This process doesn't affect the completion data for the user.

Kind regards

Jane

Thanks Jane - I'll give that a go as a fix.

However, guessing there's no way to set it up as an option for all users  to review again if they wish after completion (without affecting their completion status)?  We're having the same issue with other activities we're putting up such as Course Presentations etc too and users wanting to review content.  Presume there'll be a similar fix as you've suggested for lessons, for these such activities then? - but confirming it can only be done on an individual request basis?

Appreciate your prompt reply.

Kind regards,

Fiona

Hi Fiona

It's a frustrating issue, and one that we don't have the resource to explore in too much detail, though we tried all the obvious settings (see reply to Craig below). We've just stuck with the solution that works because our LMS has been tremendously busy over the past 2 years.

On a side note, we've found that our completion recording and general functionality issues have escalated during the pandemic, when all our users were at home on a variety of devices/browsers.

Good luck with it, and if you find a durable solution, please post it here.

Hi Jane

There are two setting in the Lesson under Grade that sound like they could help

  • Practice lesson - grade doesn't appear in the Gradebook
  • Retakes allowed - more than one attempt allowed with a choice to use the average or the maximum Grade

Thanks Craig - also good to consider.

Is there anyway that Totara (we're using version 12) will allow users to re-enter and view their lesson/Course Presentation/other activity content after it's completed (and a grade is recorded).

Ideally we're looking for an option we can set it at a course level/or activity level, so we aren't required to go back in for individual users to amend access again on a requested basis.  Jane's email was great, and I'll certainly explore this, but it would be more beneficial to all our users if we could set access for a 'view again' if needed on certain activity/content after the activity grade has been finalised.

Any advice here?, will the system allow for this?

Cheers,

Fiona

Hi Fiona

There are some activities such as Quizzes and Assignments that allow multiple attempts and also allow grades to be calculated on attempts suhc as maximum grade for the attempts.

Even after the activity has been completed the activity should be able to be reviewed  providing the maximum attempts haven't been exceeded.

Can you provide some more specifics on the types of activities you are using?

Regards

Hi Craig

Yeah, thank you, we tried all the relevant settings under grade and these didn't work consistently for us.
