Restricting editing of user profile fields / categories

Wonder if anyone can help configure the user profile so that some parts only are editable. We don't use a 'signup page' in our login process (SSO).

I would like to add a new category with user profile custom fields to the user profile that users can edit and maintain. The problems I have are:

- giving them permission to edit means they can edit ALL profile fields (e.g. HR sync fields) which we don't want

- I can't see any way to lock down categories

- Setting fields to 'not visible' doesn't seem to hide them

Has anyone used profiles in this way? Appreciate any ideas.

Hi Tina

Each custom profile field is able to be individually set

If you set the 'Is this field locked ?' to No then the user will be able to edit the contents of the field .You can also set if the field is required

This can't be set on a category level but all fields in the category can have these settings applied. individually

Thanks Craig. How would I go about locking HR import fields? These are the ones in particular I'd like to hide/lock. thanks Tina

I tried locking a custom field and this didn't have any effect on whether the field was able to be added to an HR Import.

Anyone who has the permissions to create and run HR Import is able to change user data so theoretically would be trusted not to change data that they shouldn't.
