I'm really loving Totara and believe it could work much better for our knowledge sharing which is currently happening on Slack.
However, the lack of simple code formatting options is a deal breaker for moving our tech team and other discussions (e.g. Excel tips) over as these are used all the time.

Thanks for reaching out with this suggestion and the context of why these features would be useful for you and your technical teams.
We've recently made a number of improvements to our new(ish) editor called Weka, that are now available in the version 17 release. The changes you have suggested are also things that we are aware of and are keen to implement, although these units of work are currently not planned in the next 6 months. However in the future we will continue to build out the editing capabilities and this feedback is really helpful in driving our decisions.

It would be great if the code editing options could be added to Weka at some point as increasing numbers of organisations have their own tech teams who need to share learning - I'd also vote for colour text options :)
One question - is there a particular reason apart from mobile friendliness that Weka is the only text editor option available for workspace?

We have text colour options noted as a noted enhancement too :). I've attached a screenshot of the current Weka backlog at the bottom of this comment for you to have a look at.
The Weka editor was built as part of the Talent Experience Platform release, at that point there was a decision to not support the Atto editor in the newer parts of the product, like workspaces and performance activities. Aside from enabling mobile support for the content created, we've chosen to prioritise effort to a single editor. That's given us scope to continue to improve Weka like adding the file formatting improvements and layout blocks feature, both of which appear as part of v17.
