When students are receiving custom Certificates, some are reporting the signature with an X thru the instructor's Signature. When I go to view all the certificates by the students with the certificates there is no X in the signature. below are pictures from the students and what I get when I download the certificate.

This may be a HTML version of the certificate which isn't converting the image placemarks well
Does this look Ok when save as pdf is used?

Is this using the certificate activity?
If so, you could try including the signature as part of the border image, rather than including it separately.
