Hi!

I subscribed to the new micro learning. Could you please explain how you designed the micro learning since this is something our customers would like to have in Totara. Especially the mail delivery and content. Is this managed outside of Totara with links to resourses?

Thanks!

/Stefan

Hi Stefan,

Thanks for your message.

For anyone else reading this message and curious about microlearning, anyone can sign up to get microlearning from the Totara Community here. You’ll get a weekly email which contains one Academy video on a subject like how to manage reports in Totara.

In terms of how we made this, the content is predominantly Academy content which you can access here. The emails are sent from a tool called HubSpot which we use for our newsletters. There are forms that are embedded onto the Totara platform. People can then choose to sign up for newsletters or microlearning content.

If you wanted to send out more notifications directly from Totara though there’s a lot of notification options available from Totara, including spaced notifications which could be used to create a similar microlearning program. You can learn more about building your own Totara notifications here.

Hi Matt

Thanks for your quick response. I only have one question, is it really possible to create activity specific notifications in Totara? The thing i like with your micro learning concept is that each email has lesson specific content, in Totara you can only have one general notification for all activities in a course, or have i missed something maybe?

Hi Stefan,

Thanks for your question. You can create notifications linked to individual activities. These notifications are based on what's called a trigger event - in the case of an activity-level notification, that trigger would be the user completing the activity. You can then decide to send one or more notifications following that trigger, either when the trigger event occurs or a set time afterwards. So for example, you could set up a series of microlearning emails which are sent 1 month, 2 months, 3 months after the user completed a course or activity.

If you look at the Notifications course Matt mentioned, you'll see a video on Creating and editing a notification which shows how to do that at a site level. And in our Courses and categories course you can see a video on Setting up course and activity notifications at the individual course level. You can also find more information in our Help documentation.

If you complete the Notifications course, you'll also receive some spaced notifications in the weeks following the course to experience this yourself.

I think these notifications are really powerful, and we're starting to experiment with how we can use them even more in the Community. Would love to know how you get on with using them :)

Got it!

The graphics/html5 you use in your emails (in your micro learning) is not possible to achieve with the notifications though, is it?

Not exactly like our microlearning emails, no. You can add some HTML to the header and footer of all site notifications via the Ventura theme, and you have some formatting options in the individual notifications themselves, but they don't cover everything you would need to replicate the Hubspot notifications I don't think.

Hope that helps - let us know how you get on!
