Separate completion criteria - can we turn it off???
by Carla Bradley - Thursday, 31 August 2023, 5:42 AM

Hi. We have a several courses in which we archived completions for thousands of our users to retake. 90% of those whose completions were archived are able to retake those courses with no issue.

However, some users, on their first time visiting the course page after the archive, automatically and immediately are marked complete without re-completing the activities -- just by viewing the page. This is a very serious issue for us, as legally these users are required to retake these courses.

We are pretty clueless on how to proceed. The completions are already archived so I can't really do anything else. However, we do notice one thing about these users who complete; In the Completion Editor, on the Criteria and Activities tab, if you go to the quiz (which is one of the required activities) it will show as completed, but when you click the gear by the quiz it will indicate the it used "separate completion criteria."

What the heck is "separate completion" criteria, and is there any way I can force my system to NOT use separate completion criteria? I have combed throug the configuration and not found anything. I have programmers on site who can make a change if we just know what change to make. But I can't keep having these users be automatically recompleted. Unless they are honest and call our help desk, I don't even know it's happening, and this will turn into a legal issue. Please help 🙂

Thanks, Craig. In the meantime I figured out that I needed to turn off the setting for "By default recover old grades when re-enrolling a user in a course."

But this does help me clarify my question. I would interpret "recover old grades" as recover grades if a student started work on a course, was removed, and then returned. However, once grades are archived and moved to historical tables, I wouldn't think that re-enrollment would recover those old grades. In our scenario, these students have completed a course once, their grade have been archived, and they are trying to complete it again, but the courses is retrieving their old grades and completing them immediately upon enrollment.

Anyway, I guess my issue was my interpretation of what an "old grade" was. I just would not have thought it applied to activites that were archived.

Hi Carla

thanks for confirming that the recover grades option was used. - note that if the user is unenrolled and they were enrolled using audience sync method then reenrolling them will not recover their grades. There is a warning when taking a user out of the audience that the user may lose their grades.

If this is not the behaviour you want then there is a setting for the Audience sync for what happens when the user is unenrolled - if you choose 'Disable course enrolment and remove roles' the activity grades are retained .
Select Site admin > Enrolments > Audience sync > External unenrol action to change this.
