email reminder for incomplete activity
by Julian Funk - Monday, 19 January 2026, 7:44 AM

Hello guys

I have a course with four activities. Each of these activities should be completed in the first three weeks of a quarter. Quarter 1 = Activity 1, Quarter 2 = Activity 2, etc.

I have used access rules to ensure that these activities are only visible during the corresponding periods.

Now, I would like to send a reminder email if someone does not complete an activity within the specified period. Similar to the course due date email, but at the activity level. However, this email trigger does not exist.

Does anyone know of a workaround that works without me having to construct something “shaky” with target groups or programs?

To put it simply: I want someone to complete an activity within 3 weeks, and after 2 weeks, an email notification should be sent if the activity has not been completed.

Thank's 4 your help ✌️

Hi Julian,

Thanks for getting in touch with this query.

You've correctly observed that the Activity Notifications do not offer a reminder option.

The only trigger is based on "Activity Completion".

It's therefore possible to schedule a notification to be sent out "x days after" the completion of an activity (but if the user hasn't completed the activity, there is no trigger for this).

It's worth noting that you can't target specific activity completions. In other words, if you enable the Activity Completion notification, it's sent for all activity completions in the course.

A possible workaround is to add a Feedback activity to your course.

Once you have a feedback activity, you can then add Reminders (Course Administration > Reminders). These reminders can be linked to the completion of different activities, and then send a reminder to complete the feedback.

I'm not sure it's suitable for your particular scenario, but might be useful?

This is how I have done it in the past, Tom. A more manual way to do it, which has been a preference, is to have a 'not completed course xxxx' and use the bulk user action 'Send message' to that audience. Great when you don't need to message about a lot of courses. I just popped a reminder in my calendar with the audience id, this is needed as the filter, and any links I needed to add to the message. Not automated, but gives you great control, as you can add/remove people to message manually without changing the audience. Other customers have just added the course to a program too and used the messaging functionality there.
