Totara LMS's ability to handle real time interface updates from data feeds

Hi,

We are putting together a requirements document for two way SAP (HR) integration with Totara LMS.

Does Totara LMS have the ability to handle real time updates from (integrated) data feeds?

I think it depends a bit on exactly how real-time you need it to be.

Typically a totara data sync will run on the cron, and will only update the changes each time it runs. You could run the cron pretty frequently - say every 5 minutes and it would stay up to date.

Is that sufficiently real-time or are you talking about instant updates?

In this project's initial discussions it was implied that real time = instant updates.

Is there built in support for real-time web service communication in Totara LMS?

If this can't be acheived, the cron syncs sounds like a viable option.

At this stage we are investigating the ability/limits of each system.

Hi Ira

There is some detailed documentation of the web service functions available to Moodle 2. You need to login as admin and go to Site admin > Plugins > Web services API documentation.

This will give you and idea of what can be controlled by the web services including the following functions.

These won't be available to Totara 2 is released but it would be good to read the detailed documentation of any functions you might consider using.
