Can you advise me if it is possible to create a link within the LMS to an external portal and for this to be a single sign on process rather than all our employees having to sign onto the external portal individually, every time?

It is possible within Totara, but it would be dependent on the capabilities of the external portal.

Also I think it would be useful to have search under "Manage Authentication" in the Help site, this should clarify a few matters for you.
