User data location

Hi,

I'm interested in best practice for updating scorm in courses while the course has current enrolments.  My thinking so far as the process goes is:

  1. ensure no-one is currently working in it
  2. change the settings so that 'is not available to students'
  3. do a course backup

But then I'd like some comment on what we should do if we want to update a scorm package (that is reporting to Totara and that learners have already interacted with).

  1. should we update it and reuse it (does the user data stay with the updated package??), or
  2. should we replace it entirely (but leave the original one in the 'files' area so that we keep the user data)

Cheers, Ali

Hi Ali

Sorry no one has replied to this - I can give some general guidance even though I don't have much experience in SCORM.

In general if you update an activity it is best to keep it separate from the old one so things don't get mixed up especially with assessments.

You can keep user data by restoring your backed up course - this would keep the data for activities that haven't changed. You can have the old activity and new activity in the same course because some people may not have finished the old activity.

When existing users have finished the old activity you can hide it or delete it so new users can't do this but any user data is retained.

I think any data that is in the SCORM package would be hard to get out and may not be relevant if the activity has changed.

So in my option 2 would usually be the best option.
